A 55th wedding Anniversary “Our Love” song for Joan and Steve Joan, After fifty-five years, our love has become an existence, an energy, a way of being which has shaped us, strengthened us, and molded generations. The story of love began on 6-6-66. I will always remember our first date. I was wearing my sunny yellow sport jacket, and you were in your beautiful sky-blue dress. Looking back now, it felt like the sun and the sky had come together. You looked like the blue sky, and I felt like the sunlight rising beside you. Together, we created a beautiful scene — the sun rising into a clear blue sky. From the beginning, I felt something different in you. I felt your passion, directness and your caring and loving spirit. I chose you because of your values, Joan. I chose you because of family, because of playfulness and because of the love and strength I saw in you from the beginning. Your beautiful eyes and loving smile were things I wanted to wake up seeing for the rest of my life. The first five years of our relationship at Cornell and in Boston were a thrilling, growing roller coaster ride. We were both thrown into the air by the mysteries of love. Our love was not always smooth. We broke off at times, stumbled, and had to pick up the pieces. We tripped and stumbled along our path to love, but each time we got up with even stronger love. Every stumble taught us something. Every challenge helped us continue our love story. But we always found a way back. We put those pieces back together beautifully and emerged stronger, with new opportunities to grow. That is what made our love story even more beautiful. We never gave up, because we were committed to building the best version of you, me and us. On 8-8-71, our two beautiful souls came together when we married. It was the day our path to love became something even deeper — a promise, a home, a future. During those early years, we laughed a lot. I remember how tremendously you supported me when I was starting TNT Vacations in our apartment. You believed in me. You stood beside me. You helped me build not only a business dream, but a life. Our relationship became even stronger on January 28, 1976, when we welcomed Julie. Becoming parents gave us an experience and challenge that helped us grow and learn. On May 30, 1979, we were gifted with another wonderful daughter, Amy. Julie and Amy continue to bring joy and happiness into our lives. We watched them grow into beautiful women. We watched them learn the values of family. We watched them carry forward the love, playfulness, and strength that became part of our home into their own families. There has been no better partner in raising children and creating family values than you, Joan. I adore the way you created our family culture. Our family is fun-loving, playful, determined, wise, generous, and always willing to grow. You helped make that possible. Looking back, I can see that we were always committed to learning how to love more deeply and to developing understanding and compassion for ourselves and each other.. Today, I love you with my heart and my soul. I appreciate you, and I am more grateful for you every day. Looking back, I know this clearly: I have always loved you. You have been a gift to my life. You have brought so much love into my life. You are strong, wise, thoughtful, and filled with incredible inner and outer beauty. Thank you for being the love of my life. Thank you for being my greatest teacher. Our partnership created extraordinary experiences. We are blessed to have wonderful memories with our family and friends. But after all the journeys, all the places, all the memories, and all the years, the greatest part of the story is still you.
